Our Grand Marshall

We are delighted that Maria Walsh MEP will be the Grand Marshall for the Mayo Pride Parade 2023. Born in the U.S. to Irish parents, Maria returned to Ireland at an early age and grew up in Shrule, Mayo.

Maria has been a Member of the European Parliament for the Midlands-North West since 2019. She won the Rose of Tralee in 2014, becoming the first gay woman to do so. Maria has used both of these platforms to be a passionate advocate for equality and a staunch defender of LGBTQ+ rights at home and abroad.

Maria shared why being involved with Mayo Pride was so important to her personally and as an LGBTQ+ activist: "It was only 30 years ago, in 1993, Ireland decriminalised homosexuality and so, a Pride celebration is much more than a weekend of celebration, colour and people gathering. It serves as a beacon of light for people, of all ages, living in the towns and villages across Mayo who wish to love who they love and do so in a safe and welcoming community. I am incredibly proud to support and champion Mayo Pride.”

So join Maria and hundreds of others on Saturday, June 3rd in Westport as we march to celebrate the West’s diverse and vibrant LGBTQ+ community. We’ll meet at the Fairgreen at 1.30 p.m. and march to the Quay. There will be a post-parade party of The Towers, featuring Sing Along Social, Ballina Gospel Choir & Outwest Choir, and an array of Ireland’s finest drag talent.
